QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. Master’s Degree.
  2. Valid Michigan Teacher’s Certificate.
  3. Dual certification in orientation and mobility preferred but not required.
  4. Full approval as a teacher/consultant to the extent that a district could receive state reimbursement for employment as a teacher of the blind and visually impaired.
  5. Three years of successful experience teaching children with visual impairments.
  6. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with MISD/LEA staffs and parents..
  7. Ability to represent the MISD in a positive manner to the public, LEAs, parents, and other professionals.
  8. Ability to work positively with other professionals as a team member with the ability to function without direct supervision.
  9. Must pass criminal background check as required by School Safety Legislation.

 

ASSIGNED RESPONSIBILITIES SHALL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

 

  1. Provide direct and consultative curriculum and instruction services to students with a visual impairment, including communication skills, personal adjustment, prevocational and technology skills.
  2. Collaborate with MISD and constituent school district personnel related to program, services, and professional learning related to students with a visual impairment.
  3. Work collaboratively with parent(s), guardian(s) to foster positive partnerships and serve as a referral agent to other disciplines and community agencies.
  4. Keep proper records and reports as directed.
  5. Provide coordination for adaptive equipment and transcription of educational materials into Literary and/or Nemeth Code.
  6. Provide or coordinate technology and materials in recorded, Braille or enlarged print formats. Also provide the use of tactile skills, and/or other appropriate materials for students with a visual impairment.
  7. Assist in the coordination of services with various community agencies and individuals serving students with visual impairments, including obtaining and interpreting ophthalmological, optometric and functional vision reports.
  8. Complete evaluations for METs, REEDs and IEPs, participate in those meetings, and assist with developing goals and objectives specific to the needs of the student.
  9. Provide for the continuance of successful academic performance.
  10. Maintain accurate and timely service logs, as well as reports and documents.
  11. Arrange with teacher for special learning aids, computer software and accessories.
  12. Attend IEPC meetings and provide information which will aid the committee in determining appropriate educational programming for students.
  13. Work as a team with local school personnel to help them understand teaching VI students and their unique needs.
  14. Interact with student with regard to his/her handicap.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

 

WORK YEAR:  186 days

 

UNION:           Position would be within the Macomb Intermediate Federation of Teachers.

 

SALARY:         To be determined by qualifications and experience as per the Direct Service and Degree Specialist salary schedule of the MIFT Master Agreement.

 

STARTING DATE:    As soon as possible.
